Upgrading factory KOITO lights

Postby Datsfun » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:30 pm

The bulb on my PA10 which has non sealed type KOITO lamps has blown...now this gives me an opportunity to look at alternatives...Q's

1) Are replacement bulbs, those with a round base n lamp available new? I dont know what their code is eg H1/H7
2) Will I be able to fit a more modern H1/H4 type of bulb in the same housing? I had a quick peek last night and the diameter of base of the factory bulbs appears to be much larger than normal H1/H4's
3) Should I just bin the KOITO's and replace with new 5 3/4 lamps with high power bulbs...actually I might have some in my lock up garage

there are two types of h4 bulb. p43t or p45t. p45t should be what your lights take.

Strictly speaking that is not H4...
It is a mix of H4 "glass part" fitted to R2-base.
No actual code for this as this was never used in traffic, only as aftermarket modification.
Works, but not street legal, and remember that it has higher watt ratings = can cause wiring problems.
If you want more light find something like this http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/prod/Wipac_freeform.html and fit good bulbs like Osram Night Breaker or GE +90% which are all e-marked & legal & good looking. Also redo the wiring with relays close to the bulbs, that can easily add up to 50% more light!
And FORGET the HID-conversions unless you really want to blind everyone else!

what makes you think that it's not street legal? 55/60watt is standard maximum legal limit.

Thanks for the replies guys...I need to rummage through my pile of datsun stuff. I did buy some 5 3/4 lamps, although they are not "E" marked . Flat plain clear glass and H4 bulbs. You reckon the MOT tester/local plod will have an issue?

Will, how much for these HB12 bulbs, in case I can not locate my shiny new lights..?

They're £3.50 each.

I doubt E markings apply due to the age of the vehicle to be honest.

The Koito light with R2-base bulbs is e-approved for use with non-halogen bulbs. If you have H4-bulbs then there should be "HCR" next to the e-approval to show it is for use with halogen bulbs. That is why these conversions can never be street legal. But like Will said, older cars have easier rules, so best to ask your local MOT-people, and as long as you don't go crazy like with HIDs which risk others safety most likely there is no problems.
Wonder who in China invented this "HB12" code as it is again something that is not universal and won't last long. "HB"-types are supposed to be with plastic precision base, and the antique R2-base is far from being precise or plastic...
