810 alternator probs

Postby alramone » Mon Jun 07, 2010 7:47 pm

i think the voltage reg has broken on my 180b
the battery warning light glows at tick over and all the dash warning lights come on at 2000+rpm
voltage at idle is 14 volts, and rises to 16+volts when revs rise
i don't have a clus about how these work
is it a case of replacement or repair?
anyone got a pic of one as my haynes does not show a clear pick
it also states they changed type in production. my cars a '78
any help much appreciated

had a feeling yours didnt have an external one, it will be under that black panel near the battery if there is one, same shape as B210 /B310 one. did you keep the original alternator when you changed the engine ?

Its possible the alternator you put on was an LT150 (meant for external reg) the correct one is LR150 (R standing for Regulator built in)

Perhaps you have a local alternator reconditioning place, theres one near me.

ok. alternator is a LR150. tried clening up connections but still no worky

i have other non datsun alternators i could adapt to fit but i don't understand the wiring
on the datsun alt there is one main live and two smaller wires
on normal alt's there is one main live and one smaller wire for the ignition warning light.

hmmm. it's not gone well........

managed to get a recon alternator and tried fitting it.
burnt out the fuseable link (clever datsun) large one out of the bunch, white wire.
can someone confirm if i have or don't have a voltage regulator?

i have tried disconecting things to stop it from blowing but only thing that stops it blowing is leaving the two small wires that conect to the alternator un plugged.

thanks for confirming that :)

so looks like my replacement, NEW mizibisi alternator i brought is faulty

i've just gone and removed the alternator from a vanette a15 engine and it is an internal reg 50amp alt the same as i had, just a miztubizi (whatever) instead of a hitachi, that was on originally and it now seams to work (had to bodge a wire to replace the fuseable link (don't do this)

so now i'm in need of a replacement fuseable link before i'm done :banghead:

oh. forgot to mention, my battery light is now on. thou the charging light is not. it may be because of my crappy bodged link wire or maybe the battery is fried?
voltage is 15 volts when running, 12somthing when engine off.

batt light is originally an electrolyte dipstick. the wire is generally pushed into the + batt feed to cancel the light.

i have new fusible link in stock

It can be confusing if the alternator has been reconditioned by LUCAS at any time in its life. The part numbers for Lucas recon alternators start with LR (for "Lucas Recon"), so even if the Hitachi number was an LT, the Lucas sticker gives it a LR number (not necessarily LR150 etc, because this is Lucas's own numbering system, it doesn't follow the Hitachi system).
