Postby StonyRay » Sun Feb 21, 2010 5:59 pm

just changed my gear oil for an 80W90 GL5 correct level and all, but the gear shift seems notchy on 1st, is GL5 ok? or should it have been GL4 in the box?

GL5 to the diff, GL-4 to gearbox.
Take the GL-5 IMMEDIATELY AWAY as it is harmfull for bushings!!!

we use 75 transgear type product to allow easy gear change.

oils have changed since 80's,sythetics now allow same quality with thiner viscosity oils.
too much info for a simple answer.

You may mean that there is fully synthetic transmission with both classifications: "GL-4/5".
Those can be used both in RWD-diff and gear boxes. But plain GL-5 only in some old French gearboxes!
And viscosity is a totally other thing than the GL-something which tells where to use that oil in question.

I didnt get my full post on lost in space.

japanese spec book give GL4 for manual gearbox and steering box-GL5 for rear axle.

australian manual spec GL4 [HYPOID] HYP-C80W90 for all exept GL5 with aditive for LSD[clutch/cones].

trans gear oils are common NOW here for FWD aplications and used in normal RWD manual gearboxes to improve shift quality.
these are may not be synthetic oil.
75 or 65W80 was what i found best.other forums love 75W90.

I did a quick google and found that nissan dealers sell 75W85 GL4 for manual trans mission shift improvement.and if it smells like gear oil[sulphur] dont use in gearbox.
