Not sure how much you got from Wills writings already but an E10-F10-N10 gearbox always whines as just like a Mini the box is below the engine and 3 cogs transfer the power from the clutch to the gearbox. When you press the clutch the strain is taken off the gears so they become quiet, and when not driving they stop turning. So whining is part of the deal and charm of these Datsuns.
Checking the oil is good anyway and the plug for that is located on the front side of the car. If you look through the gap between the front valance and the subframe you will see a plug with a square hole, that will take a 1/2 socket extention to remove. That is the filler plug and also the level (top up until the level reaches the bottom of the hole, make sure the car is level when doing this!)
