what is this thingy, cirkeled in red?
it is not connected to anything at the moment, if i follow the plugs hanging just underneath it the wiring seems to be leading to the alternator.

everything in the car is working, apart from the brakelights but i am pretty sure this unidentified object has no connection to the brakelights..

I would guess the car has been fitted with an alternator that has a voltage regulator built in, making the separate unit not required any more, and so it is disconnected.
Check the battery charging rates are ok, although fairly sure it will be fine as you would be having all kinds of problems if the voltage was unregulated

Brake lights definately a separate problem

Show us a picture of the alternator , try to show or type any numbers on it , possibly LR150 or LT150 if it is a Hitachi unit.

Also have a look at the plug which would normally be connected to this box. It might have a link of wire bridging 2 of the pins together to bypass it.
