240L non starter

Postby c71s » Tue Jul 27, 2010 6:08 pm

Ok had a bad day with this one....

Drove down to the shops, she started fine after and after 30 or so seconds of driving she cut out. Pulled over popped the bonnet - nothing hanging off. Cranked her a couple of times, checked electrics all seemed ok. Rang home and got pulled back.

Just been out again after a bit of a look and cranked it, it did eventually start to fire but plooms of smoke out the back and oily petroly water absolutely pissing out of the exhaust manifold at the join and all over the place airbox etc

Rightly I stopped and mopped up the puddle having made a proper mess. Is she goosed or what? Any help greatly received?!

Oh shit man! Datman should be able to help as he put the engine back in the car before I bought it and should know it pretty well

sounds like flooded.. bit of dirt in the needle valve. window on carb will be full rather than half way up..

clean /polish needle valve. hopefully fixed.
also check return line to tank is not blocked as that can cause too much fuel pressure at the needle valve

i wasn't sure if the flooding after the initial stop was caused by me trying to start it but the chamber on the left (when stood facing the car) was indeed full and gurgling. Will have a look in the morning.

temp cure is to clamp off supply pipe with mole grips or brakepipe clamp, the chamber will empty (eventually) and the valve tends to reseat

ok well having had a proper look the chamber doesn't actually overfill. seems to be behaving itself.

So now the car fires and what seems to be oil with petrol appears to gush out from where the block meets the gearbox. great.

When you say it fires, does it start and run normally?

Hows the oil level on the dipstick?

it will turn over - but lumpy won't run smoothly. didn't want to keep it going. And the oil level has dropped of the stick

Having had a chance to go and investigate.

New oil & filter, plugs, adjusted points, got spark, triple checked the leads, ..firing order.. number one is front end of the block, yes??

there was some discussion about these being numbered the other way and we aren't sure

1 at front, order 153624 anticlockwise distributor rotation. there should be a line on the dizzy cap , near one of the clips, which shows where number1 should be. surely it was running before?

can't really tell, but getting em wrong wont make fluid leak out. I hear youve had an offer for someone to have a look at it for you, have you got back them?

Is it sparking?

it was flooded had petrol in the sump. drained oil (which had fuel in) put on a new filter. fresh oil in. fresh plugs leads. just putting it all back together now, it has a spark but won't run at the moment, hence the questions about firing order etc.

Those wires got unplugged as I dropped a screw into the distributor and had to take it off to get the blooming thing out, so more need to set that all up too

And yes that is an impossibly small hole to drop something in.

thanks to Al its its running again! after a bit of a run its cleaned out most the crap and stopped smoking.

Still not convinced with the carb to be honest it absolutely drank the petrol used on the test run. Its idling very low and when trying to pull away in first, seems sluggish and will try to stall. this morning from cold when you go to rev it the carb gives a little cough and dies :(

found the idle but can't see where to adjust the mixture?!

poor thing...
we re set the dissy roughly and put the wire on the correct way around  . removed the carb float needle and made sure that was ok.
also fixed a couple of other small things, alternator was falling off and wire weren't conected properly etc..
we did not set the ignition timing and that may :?: be all thats wrong now?
i'm at work in a few hours and can pop round with a timing light.

Do these carbs have brass floats that are soldered together and can fill up with petrol causing flooding?

having been great for the past week or so, it gave up last night, and wouldn't start. clamped off pipes and went to start but already its leaking everywhere from the same place as last time, so completely flooded the engine. on the hunt for any carb kits so give it an overhaul if any knows or has seen any that would be most helpful.
